Dr. Fred de Boer is an associate professor in Resource Ecology Group at Wageningen University in The Netherlands. His scientific interest focuses on the understanding of population fluctuations, species distribution, herbivore-vegetation interactions, species interactions (competition, predation and facilitation), and species diversity. Most of his research projects aimed at for instance understanding animal distribution from the movements animals make under the influence of various factors that operate at different spatial and temporal scales. Recently, he has focused more on disease ecology aiming to understand the spatial patterns in disease outbreaks.
 
讲座简介:
 
Animal populations live in a fragmented world, as most of their habitats are patchy. Fragmented habitat patches can be mapped, and networks be analysed by Graph Theory, where the areas are nodes and the movements are edges, an upcoming field that is applied to a variety of network analysis. This talk introduces the use of Graph Theory to test how a disease is spread over the continent, to what extent different networks are coupled or unconnected, and what the best disease control mechanisms are.
