Large scientific facilities driven by relativistic electron beams, such as synchrotron light sources, have played a key role in the development of physics, chemistry, biology, and material science. These massive machines produce intense x-rays that researchers use to probe molecules, atoms, crystals, and innovative new materials in order to better understand their structure and behavior. In this talk, I will give an overview of recent advances in the development of x-ray light sources. I will focus on x-ray free-electron lasers that are enabling forefront science in various areas by giving researchers unparalleled power and precision in examining the fundamental nature of matter.

11/2010~present, Staff Scientist, FEL and Beam Physics Department, SLAC
· Principal Investigator (PI) for the Early Career Award Project “Advanced seeding and beam manipulation for next-generation x-ray free electron lasers” ($2.5 M, 2012-2016)
· Scientific lead of the ECHO-75 project ($3.2 M, 2012-2014)
· Scientific lead of the ECHO-7 project ($5.6 M, 2009-2012);
· Led the ECHO-7 team to accomplish the first evidence of high harmonics from the echo-enabled harmonic generation technique;
· Proposed the triple modulator-chicane scheme for seeding sub-nanometer FELs;
· Proposed a new chicane-type beam line to achieve exact emittance exchange;
08/2008~10/2010, Research Associate, FEL and Beam Physics Department, SLAC
· Lead scientist for the Laboratory Directed Research and Development project “Proposal for an echo-enabled harmonic generation experiment at NLCTA”;
· Participated in Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) commissioning;
· Theoretically studied EEHG and extended it for generation of narrow-band THz radiation and attosecond x-ray pulse;
· Proposed the laser-assisted emittance exchange technique;

· Studied the effects of coherent synchrotron radiation in a bunch compressor;
· Studied the theories of diffraction radiation and its application in beam diagnostics;
