Lecture Abstract: International networks and proliferating trade created a market economy during different periods of world history. This is evident in the Muslim world during the 9-12th century, as well as during the last two decades. Through examining and juxtaposing three main issues, linkages and connections will show the similarities and differences between the conditions which enabled this similar process of globalization in two different historical contexts. The first issue will be methods of learning: the transition to inquisitive learning, openness to different cultures, language reforms and other changes in the 9-12th century all contributed to the new global network which emerged. The second notable aspect which enabled this global network was the change in trade techniques.
