2013清华大学许宝騄讲座

为了纪念许宝騄先生在统计和概率领域的开创性贡献,尤其是他对中国统计和概率界的杰出贡献,清华大学数学科学中心于2011年设立清华大学许宝騄讲座。该奖将每年颁给一位在统计和概率方面做出杰出贡献的个人。获奖者将受邀来清华大学发表演讲,并接受证书以及奖金。

S. R. Srinivasa Varadhan是印裔美籍数学家,他在概率论特别是建立大偏差的统一理论方面做出了重要贡献。
Varadhan教授于1963年在印度统计研究所获得博士学位。自1963到1966年,他在纽约大学克朗数学研究所做博士后。Varadhan教授现任克朗数学研究所的数学教授及Frank J. Gould科学教授,他与Daniel W. Stroock关于扩散过程的研究成果以及与M. D. Donsker在大偏差方面的合作研究成果尤为出色。
多年来,Varadhan教授获得过多项荣誉,其中包括由美国总统奥巴马颁发的美国国家科学奖章(2010)。他还曾获得伯克霍夫奖(1994),纽约大学的玛格丽特和赫尔曼索科尔艺术科学奖(1995),及美国数学学会颁发的Leroy P. Steele开创性研究贡献奖(1996)。2007年,Varadhan教授因其与M. D. Donsker在大偏差方面的研究成就而获得阿贝尔奖。2008年,获得政府授予的颁发的Padma Bhushan奖(印度的一个重要奖励)。

2013 Tsinghua University Pao-Lu Hsu Distinguished Lecture

The Tsinghua University Pao-Lu Hsu Distinguished Lecture was established in 2011 by the Mathematical Sciences Center to honor the fundamental contributions of Pao-Lu Hsu to statistics and probability and the foundations he laid for the development of the field in China. The lectureship is awarded annually to an individual who has made outstanding scholarly contributions to the advancement of statistical methodology and probability theory, or their application in the sciences. The recipient will deliver a public lecture at Tsinghua University. The award includes round-trip travel to Beijing, a citation and a cash prize.

Lecture 1
Title: Scaling Limits, Large Deviations and Particle Systems.
Abstract: Large systems are often studied by rescaling. The limiting behavior of the rescaled system is usually simpler. The theory of large deviations which estimates the probabilities of rare events is useful in studying the collective behavior of a large system of particles and their scaling limits. We will examine some examples.

Lecture 2
Title: Large Deviations and Random Graphs.
Abstract: We consider a random graph with N vertices where each edge, independently of others, has probability p of being there. We can calculate easily the expected number of triangles and other subgraphs with a finite number of vertices. We examine the large deviation theory for the number of such objects and illustrate its use with some applications.

Introduction of S. R. Srinivasa Varadhan

S. R. Srinivasa Varadhan is an Indian American mathematician who is known for his fundamental contributions to probability theory and in particular for creating a unified theory of large deviations.
Varadhan received his doctorate in 1963 from the Indian Statistical Institute. Since 1963, he has worked at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University, where he was at first a postdoctoral fellow (1963–66). Varadhan is currently Professor of Mathematics and Frank J. Gould Professor of Science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. He is known for his work with Daniel W. Stroock on diffusion processes, and for his work on large deviations with M. D. Donsker.

Varadhan's awards and honours include the National Medal of Science (2010) from President Barack Obama. He received also the Birkhoff Prize (1994), the Margaret and Herman Sokol Award of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, New York University (1995), and the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Seminal Contribution to Research (1996) from the American Mathematical Society. He was awarded the Abel Prize in 2007 for his work on large deviations with M. D. Donsker. In 2008, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan.

Varadhan is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (1995), and the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (2009). He was elected to Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1988), the Third World Academy of Sciences (1988), the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (1991), the Royal Society (1998), the Indian Academy of Sciences (2004), and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (2009).
