Soil organic matter (SOM) contains about twice the amount of carbon in the atmosphere and is an important component in global carbon cycle and terrestrial ecosystem.  With global changes,potential shifts in SOM degradation and transport are a major concern.  Yet due to its heterogeneity, SOM remains largely unknown in terms of its molecular composition and responses to climatic events.  My research focuses on the degradation and transport of SOM in terrestrial and riverine systems and on the biogeochemical and physical processes that affect organic matter distribution atboth the molecular level and landscape scales.In particular, using molecular-level techniques [including biomarkers,nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry and compound-specific 14C analyses], I hope to utilize the structural and isotopic information preserved in soil organic molecules and provide novel insights into soil carbon dynamics in a changing climate. My talk will focus on the following aspects:
(1) Changes in SOM composition and soil carbon processes under climate changes (including warming and CO2 enrichment, etc);
(2) Environmental controls on the residence time of land-derived carbon during global river transports (a compound-specific 14C perspective);
(3) Climate-induced mobilization of permafrost carbon in the Arctic.
