After years of discouraging progress in development and acute challenges to security, there is a sense that Africa has entered a new era of growth and stability. The traditional problem of "Afro-pessimism" has been replaced by an "Afro-optimism" that sees a bright future for the continent. How realistic is this new optimism? While African countries have seen economic improvement, new investment, and more stable politics, there are also challenges of industrialization, shared growth, economic globalization, and the development of institutions to sustain long-term development. This lecture will discuss the profound changes in the continent over the last decades, and the pressing issues for African countries looking ahead. |
