ABSTRACT
Microwave imaging is a technique aimed at inspecting targets starting from measurements of the field scattered data due to the interactions between the body under test and an illuminating field at microwave frequencies. This active techniques has been considered an emerging technique for a long time. Recent developments, however, allow now to consider it a promising tool in several applications, ranging from nondestructive testing and evaluations to medical imaging. In this seminar, some of the recently proposed methods and systems are discussed. After an introduction concerning the basic formulation of the electromagnetic inverse problem (which is the basic theory of microwave imaging methods), tomographic approaches and scanning systems are reviewed, with some specific examples concerning both the proposed illumination/measurement systems and the related computational procedures adopted for inverting the measured data in order to find the key feature of the target under test (e.g., the distributions of the dielectric parameters).
Matteo Pastorino received the “laurea” degree in electronic engineering from the university of Genoa, Italy, in 1987 and the Ph.D. degree in electronics and computer science in 1992. Since 2008, he has been a Full Professor of Electromagnetic Fields at the University of Genoa. He has been the past Director of the Department of Biophysical and Electronic Engineering (DIBE, 2008-2011). Currently, he is the Director of the Department of Telecommunication, Electronic, Electrical Engineering and Naval Architecture (DITEN). He is also the responsible of the local section of the National Society of Electromagnetics (SIEM). Prof. Pastorino teaches the courses of “Electromagnetic Fields”, “Remote Sensing and Electromagnetic Propagation”, “Acoustic and Electromagnetic Emission of Ships,” and “Yacht Navigation Support Systems”. His main research interests are in the field of imaging and diagnostic systems, antennas and propagation, direct and inverse electromagnetic scattering and radar modeling. He is the author of the book Microwave Imaging (Wiley, 2010) and the coauthor of more than 350 papers in international journals and congress proceedings. Prof. Pastorino is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Trans. on Instrumentation and Measurement and of the International Journal of Antennas and Propagation. He served several times as a Co-chair of the IEEE International Conference on Imaging Systems and Techniques (IST). He is also a member of the editorial boards and technical program committees of several other international journals and conferences in the field of microwaves and antennas.
Andrea Randazzo received the “laurea” degree in Telecommunication Engineering from the University of Genoa in 2001 and the Ph.D. degree in Information and Communication Science and Technology, from the same university, in 2006. Since 2010 he is an assistant professor at the University of Genoa. Its main research activities are related to numerical methods for electromagnetic imaging (based on stochastic approaches and new regularization paradigms applied to deterministic methods), direct and inverse electromagnetic scattering, radar modeling, and smart algorithms applied to antennas. Andrea Randazzo is co-author of more than 130 papers (most of them on IEEE international journals and conference proceedings). He is member of the Technical Program Committee of the IEEE International Workshop on Imaging Systems and Techniques (since 2004). Furthermore, he served as chairman in several international conference sessions. Since 2008, he teaches post-graduate and master courses (e.g., “Radar system theory”, “Radar apparatuses and components”, “Microwaves and Antenna Theory”).
