I will present the results of resolved optical sideband spectroscopy of a single laser-cooled calcium ion in a Penning trap. We observe sidebands arising from for the three motional modes and can determine their temperatures. The ion can be prepared in the ground state of its motion using resolved sideband cooling. We have also demonstrated, for the first time in a Penning trap, the creation and manipulation of a wide variety of ion Coulomb crystals (ICCs), which have potential applications in quantum simulations with trapped ions.

Richard Thompson graduated in Physics from the University of Oxford in 1976 and remained in Oxford for his doctorate in atomic spectroscopy. After postdoctoral positions in Oxford and Karlsruhe (Germany) he took up a position at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, where he was involved in the first work with laser-cooled trapped ions in the UK. He moved to the Physics department at Imperial College in 1986 as a Lecturer. He is now Professor of Experimental Physics at Imperial and has a small research group working on the dynamics and quantum optics of laser-cooled ions in Penning traps. |
