主讲人简介:

Xiangdong Zhang, a professor at the International Arctic Research Center and Department of Atmospheric Science/College of Natural Science and Mathematics, University of Alaska Fairbanks. He got his Ph.D. in 1992 from Nanjing University and B.S. in 1983 from Nanjing Institute of Meteorology. Now, his major research interests are on atmosphere-sea ice-ocean-hydrology interactions, and his several prominent scientific results have been published on the journal of Nature.

讲座简介:

In this report, he and his collaborator found a wetting trend in northern high latitudes, evidenced by increasing Eurasian Arctic river discharges. And, in the past decade, the increase of river discharge has accelerated and an unprecedented record high discharge occurred in 2007 along with an extreme loss of Arctic summer sea-ice cover. Through scientific analysis, they found that enhancement of poleward atmospheric moisture transport decisively contributes to increased Eurasian Arctic river discharges. A radical shift of the atmospheric circulation pattern induced an unusually large atmospheric moisture transport and warm surface in 2006-2007 over Eurasia, resulting in the record high discharge. The results of their work have very important implications for changes in hydrological cycle, density-driven ocean circulation and ecosystem in the Arctic regions in the context of global warming. The findings of this report have been published on Nature Climate Change.
