  简介:
Title: Dependability of Cyber-Physical Systems

Duration: 45 minutes~1 hour, followed by Q&A

Abstract: A Cyber-Physical System (CPS), in the narrow sense, refers to a mission/life critical system with complex interactions between its computing subsystems and physical subsystems. These complex interactions usually involve computing, control, communications, and other physical-domain-specific rules.

Dependability of CPS is a major concern of CPS research. Not only because CPS systems are typically mission/life critical, but also because of their inter-disciplinary nature. Due to this nature, a CPS system’s development team must involve professionals from disparate backgrounds. Few, if not none, of these professionals can have the full cross-domain knowledge to understand the CPS holistically and accurately. Design errors and runtime faults are therefore inevitable, which seriously challenge the dependability of CPS.

In this talk, we shall give concrete examples on how to leverage CPS domain-specific knowledge to enhance CPS dependability. Specifically, we shall see how control stability theories, bio-medical non-linear features, state-of-the-art hybrid systems tools, knowledge engineering tools etc. can be applied to CPS fault avoidance, fault elimination, fault prediction, fault tolerance, and risk management.

We conclude the talk with a problem space formulation, which provides us an exciting vision of the vast research opportunities in CPS dependability.

Bio: Qixin Wang received the B.E. and M.E. degrees from Dept. of Computer Sci. and Tech., Tsinghua Univ. (Beijing, China) in 1999 and 2001 respectively; and the PhD degree from the Dept. of Computer Science, Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2008. He joined the Dept. of Computing in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2009 as an assistant professor. His research interests include cyber-physical systems, real-time/embedded systems/networks, and their applications in industrial control, medicine and assisted living. He has authored/coauthored nearly 40 papers in leading publication venues in these fields, including a featured article in IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing 2008 May Issue and an article winning 2008 best paper award of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. He is a member of IEEE and ACM.
