主讲人简介:

Dr. Zhao Ming is a project scientist (III) and a co-lead of the atmospheric model workgroup for the development of GFDL next generation global climate model (AM4/CM4) and Earth system model (ESM4). Zhao received his BS and MS from Nanjing Institute of Meteorology in 1990 and 1993 respectively, and his PhD from the University of British Columbia in 2003. Zhao was a core developer for GFDL AM3 and High resolution atmospheric model (HIRAM), both of them were used in GFDL’s participation of the CMIP5. Zhao’s work on global model simulations of hurricanes has motivated the US CLIVAR hurricane working group, GFDL development of hurricane seasonal prediction systems, GFDL’s participation for IPCC AR5 high resolution time-slice simulations, and many postdocs and students works at Princeton University, other universities and organizations. Zhao’s research interests include 1) moist convection, clouds, atmospheric boundary layer turbulence, and their parameterizations in global climate models; 2) tropical cyclones and climate; 3) climate sensitivity and its connection to convection presentation in GCMs. Zhao has published over 60 papers with total citations over 1000.

讲座简介:

How may tropical cyclones (TC) respond to the anticipated 21st century global warming? This question has received considerable attention in recent years.  However, at this time, there are no reliable theories to establish a quantitative relationship between TC statistics (frequency, intensity, and size) and climate. Without such a theory, future projections of TC statistics will rely heavily on numerical model simulations. Zhao will speak about various challenges and opportunities he has learnt for the past few years based on various modeling work he and his colleagues have pursued at GFDL. They include global model simulations of present-day TC variability, future projections, model uncertainties, as well as recent multi-model inter-comparison efforts through the US CLIVAR Hurricane Working Group.  Theories for explaining some robust simulation results will be discussed.
