We are fast approaching the era of the advanced ground-based interferometric gravitational wave detector network. With these instruments there is the very realistic prospect of the direct detection of   gravitational waves from compact binary coalescence. In this talk I will briefly discuss the current state of the installation and commissioning of these detectors, review the achievements of the initial detectors with regards to compact binary coalescence. I will then discuss the expected rate of detections with the advanced detectors and the ongoing efforts towards low-latency searches and their impact on multi-messenger astronomy.
