Discovery is one of the main drivers of developing major new science instruments. Managed through Chinese Academy of Sciences and the National Astronomical Observatories, China is building the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope, the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). NAOC, sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, is also spearheading the national participation in the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) project, of which China is a founding member. NAOC also hosts several PI driven radio experiments, targeting EoR, BAO, and ISM.
I will present a brief introduction of NAOC’s role in FAST and SKA and related efforts in other experiments. A personal perspective will be provided on their potential for discoveries in three areas 1)Evolution of the Universe and the Galaxies through HI imaging and intensity mapping 2) Quantifying and discovering the content of interstellar medium 3)probing fundamental physics with pulsars. "

Dr. Li is an experimental astrophysicist, having led projects of Arecibo, FCRAO, SWAS, Spitzer, Herschel, and SOFIA. He pioneered observing and data analysis techniques, including HI narrow self-absorption technique and a new inversion algorithm for solving interstellar dust temperature distribution. These techniques lead to important measurements of star forming regions, such as their formation time scales. He was a key member of the team who first discovered molecular oxygen in space and then confirmed it with Herschel. His works have been highlighted on Nature magazine as one of the Astronomy highlights of 2010 and have been cited by review articles. He won the 2005 National Research Council (USA) Research Fellow postdoctoral award due to his “outstanding abilities as a result of national competition”. He was appointed as a “national expert” through the Chinese 1000-talent program in 2013 and is now leading the science preparation of the Five-hundred-meter |
