Abstract
Success is 1% inspiration, 10% hard work, and a great deal of luck. Dr. Sutherland will describe how luck has shaped his life and career. This talk will touch on his work in computer graphics, the integrated circuit revolution, and his present interest in self-timed systems. Dr. Sutherland will conclude with some remarks about "nothing.” Nothing or emptiness, stresses human reasoning, but is a central  part of computing. Hardware engineers, who deal with real physical objects, often overlook the value of representing "nothing". The title of this talk refers to the value of understanding and representing Nothing in hardware as well as in software.
Bio
Ivan Sutherland received a Ph.D. degree from MIT in 1963 after completing a thesis called "Sketchpad: A Man-Machine Graphical Communication System.“ He taught at Harvard and the University of Utah, continuing his work in computer graphics. From 1976 to 1980 he was the Fletcher Jones Professor of Electrical Engineering at Caltech and founding head of computer science there. For many years he was a Fellow and Vice President in the research laboratory of Sun Microsystems. Dr. Sutherland is a member of both the National Academy of Sciences  and the National Academy of Engineering.  He was the 1988 recipient of the ACM Turing Award and the  2012 recipient of the Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology. Dr. Sutherland is author of over 60 patents, as well as numerous  technical papers. He makes his home in Portland, Oregon. He now works as a Visiting Scientist at Portland State University (PSU) in the Asynchronous Research Center (ARC) that he founded with his wife, Marly Roncken, in 2008.
