One of the most important potential applications of quantum computers is simulation of physical quantum systems. In addition, simulation also provides a foundation for more general quantum algorithms for tasks like solving linear systems and differential equations. Quantum algorithms for simulation of physical quantum systems usually use a product formula corresponding to many short-time evolutions. Here I present a new approach which compresses the product formula by using a superposition of times. This provides dramatically improved performance, and in particular exponentially improves the precision of the simulation.

Dr. Dominic Berry is an ARC Future Fellow at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. He received his PhD from the University of Queensland in 2001, and worked at Macquarie University, University of Queensland, and Institute for Quantum Computing, before returning to Macquarie in 2011 as an ARC Future Fellow. He has developed the fastest known quantum algorithms for simulation of physical quantum systems, using techniques such as quantum walks and compression of product formulae. He has also made extensive contributions to the theory of phase measurement in quantum optics. |
