报告摘要:

Current medical imaging modalities rely on differences in tissue properties rather than on chemical-content changes deep inside the body. Consequently, a biopsy is routinely needed for ultimate diagnosis of a malignancy. Thus, we need noninvasive imaging technologies that can be used in vivo and can determine in real time the chemical content of deep-tissue. I will present our persistent efforts in transforming molecular spectroscopy from an in vitro analytical tool to a set of in vivo label-free imaging platforms that have been enabling groundbreaking discoveries and paradigm-shifting diagnosis strategies. This transformation is achieved partly through development of coherent Raman scattering microscopy for real-time spectroscopic imaging of living cells and development of vibration-based photoacoustic endoscopy/tomography for bond-selective imaging of deep tissues. Potentially transformative applications to cancer metabolism, cardiovascular disease, neuroscience, and materials science will be presented.

 主讲人简介:

Ji-Xin Cheng was born in Jixi, Anhui Province, P. R. China in 1971. He attended University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) from 1989 to 1994. From 1994 to 1998, he carried out his PhD study on bond-selective chemistry under the supervision of Qingshi Zhu at USTC. As a graduate student, he worked as a research assistant at Universite Paris-sud (France) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). After postdoctoral training in Yijing Yan’s group at HKUST and Sunney Xie’s group at Harvard University, Cheng joined Purdue University in 2003 as Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2009 and Full Professor in 2013 in Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and Department of Chemistry.

Professor Cheng is a world-renowned pioneer in the field of spectroscopic imaging. He is currently the Scientific Director of label-free imaging at Purdue University Discovery Park. His laboratory publishes papers in Nature Photonics, Nature Nanotechnology, PNAS, Phys Rev Lett, Angewandte Chemie and other journals. He is authored in over 160 peer-reviewed articles that have been cited more than 10,000 times. He achieved an h-index of 49 (Google Scholar) at the age of 43. His leadership is also demonstrated as the organizer of 23 national/international symposia, over 160 invited talks, and as lead editor of the first book on Coherent Raman Scattering Microscopy, published by CRC Press in 2012. His is a co-inventor of CARS microscope which is now available through Olympus and Leica. In 2013 He founded Vibronix Inc with the mission of saving lives through label-free imaging technology.

Professor Cheng’s achievements have been recently recognized by Fellow of American Institute of Medicine and Biological Engineering (2014), Purdue University Faculty Scholar (2012-17), College of Engineering Early Career Research Award (2011), Research Excellence Award from Purdue Center for Cancer Research (2011), and Outstanding Young Scientist Award from Chinese National Academy of Sciences (2009).
