Abstract: Electron emission and scattering are fundamental processes in electron microscopy and spectroscopy experiments. Along with rapid development of ultrafast high-resolution electron imaging techniques utilizing spatially and temporally localized electron-beams, it is critically necessary to understand the underlying mechanisms by analyzing electron emission and scattering processes at the nanoscale. For this purpose, we have performed first-principles simulations of electron dynamics using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), which is formally exact and computationally efficient for studying electronically excited states. Our simulations of field emission microscopy (FEM) images of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) demonstrate that the FEM patterns are largely contributed from the localized states in the CNT tip and there is a strong correlation between theoretical and experimental results. Quite recently, major advancements have also been made in simulations of laser-assisted field emission from nanoribbons, as well as electron scattering with nanoflakes. In the talk, we give a thorough introduction of our new findings in the study of the above various topics, and demonstrate the great importance of first-principles simulation of electron dynamics in nanostructures under external fields.
