  简介:
Abstract:
Recent years have seen unprecedented motivation for the emergence of new energy technologies. The global energy dependence on fossil fuels, however, will persist until alternate technologies can be achieved economically. We must develop means to produce energy (or energy carriers) from renewable sources and then convert them to work as efficiently and cleanly as possible. In this talk, several recent progresses on electrocatalytic based energy conversion from carbon dioxide and water, and redox reaction based energy storage of electricity (that is, batteries and supercapacitors) will be highlighted and discussed. The central theme of these studies is the interplay of fundamental mechanistic studies and materials design: first-principles-based calculations and well-defined experimental model systems are the keys to identify the scientific principles governing the catalyst/electrode behavior, based on which the rational design of catalyst/electrode materials are carried out for achieving high-performance.

Biography:
Dr. Qi Lu is a postdoctoral fellow in Prof. Jingguang Chen’s group at Columbia University in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Prior to this appointment, he was a postdoctoral fellow in Prof. Feng Jiao’s group in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Delaware where he obtained his Ph.D. degree in Physics. Dr. Qi Lu’s research interests lie in the development of technologies for a long-term, sustainable energy economy. His past research has been focused on the fundamental study into the chemistry and physics of materials and engineering their surface and bulk properties to ultimately improve the efficiency in renewable energy conversion and storage. The results of these efforts have appeared in a number of high impact journals such as Nature Communications and Angewandte Chemie International Edition, and have been highlighted in several popular news outlets such as Science Daily and Chemistry Views. In addition, the technique he developed for preparing Ni/NiO nanocomposite electrodes has been adapted for commercialization by Delwatt Co., Ltd. for off-the-grid electricity storage.
