    Dr. Dara Entekhabi received his PhD degree from MIT in 1990.  He currently is the Bacardi and Stockholm Water Foundations Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences at the MIT. He also serves as the Director of Ralph M. Parsons Laboratory for Environmental Science and Engineering and the Director of Earth System Initiative in MIT. His research interests include land-atmosphere interactions, Earth remote sensing, physical hydrology, data assimilation, and so on.

    Professor Dara is a fellow of IEEE, AGU and AMS and currently working as the science team leader of the SMAP (Soil Moisture Active and Passive) mission of NASA.
 
讲座简介:
   
    NASA’s Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission was launched on January 31, 2015. SMAP provides high-resolution, frequent revisit global mapping of soil moisture and freeze/thaw state based on coincident L-band radiometer and L-band radar measurements. In this presentation the status of the SMAP observatory and early results based on the science data products will be presented. The performance and the calibration of the instruments will be included in this presentation. Soil moisture products with varying resolution and coverage are produced from the radiometer alone, radar alone, radiometer-radar combination and data assimilation. The mapping low-frequency microwave radar and radiometer measurements are also used in development of new data and information on the cryosphere and the biosphere. This presentation introduces new Earth monitoring opportunities with the availability of mapping active and passive microwave measurements.
