讲座简介: Black carbon aerosol is produced in flames, stays in the atmosphere for a few days, and warms the earth during its time in the atmosphere. There have been high-level policy discussions about slowing climate warming by reducing black carbon emissions. In order to connect climate with black carbon, and other pollutants emitted from combustion, a sequence of scientific steps is needed from emission to forcing to climate. This talk will summarize an extensive journal paper that synthesizes the climate effects of black carbon, including direct climate forcing, climate changes related to clouds, and forcing from deposition on snow and ice. I will also identify knowledge gaps where more research could help to reduce uncertainties.

Prof. Tami Bond is a Nathan M. Newmark Distinguished Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Arthur and Virginia Nauman Faculty Scholar. Dr. Bond joined the faculty in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2003. Since 2007, she is also an Affiliate Professor in Atmospheric Sciences. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in air quality monitoring and modeling. Prof. Bond is a member of American Geophysical Union and American Association for Aerosol Research, and an Editor at Aerosol Science and Technology. She recently served on a National Academy of Sciences committee regarding the international transport of air pollutants. She holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington, an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering (UC Berkeley) and an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering (University of Washington, 2000). Awards include the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (2014), an NSF CAREER grant (2004-present), the Arthur and Virginia Nauman Faculty Scholar Award (2006-present), the Xerox Award for Faculty Research (2007), a Center for Advanced Study Fellowship at the University of Illinois (2008), and a NOAA Climate and Global Change Postdoctoral Fellowship (2000-2002). |
