In the U.S. Pacific Northwest, there are 12 populations of salmon and steelhead in the basin listed under Endangered Species Act, as well as bull trout, a resident fish. Fish can be injured or killed during passage through hydroelectric dams. The hydraulic conditions in these environments that pose a risk to fish health include turbulence, shear, strike and pressure. I will talk about two major technologies we developed to evaluate the ecological impact of hydroelectric dams: Sensor Fish and a cabled acoustic telemetry system. We developed the Sensor Fish device, an autonomous sensor package, to better characterize the conditions fish experience while passing through complex hydraulic environments. The Juvenile Salmon Acoustic Telemetry System (JSATS) is a nonproprietary technology developed by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Portland District, for evaluating behavior and survival of juvenile salmonids migrating through the Columbia River Federal Power System. Cabled systems are typically deployed at hydroelectric dams and are used to determine passage route and near-dam behavior for tagged fish. We also developed an injectable microtransmitter for USACE. Both Sensor Fish and JSATS systems have been successfully deployed at many major dams to acquire information for salmon protection and to develop more “fish-friendly” hydroelectric facilities.

Dr. Deng is a Chief Scientist in Energy & Environment Directorate at PNNL. He has led water power and fish passage projects funded by Depart of Energy (DOE) Hydropower program, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and Public Utilities District. He is a co-developer of the autonomous six-degree-of freedom Sensor Fish device. He led the development of stochastic blade-strike models for estimating the biological performance of large Kaplan turbines. Dr. Deng is a co-developer of the Juvenile Salmon Acoustic Telemetry System (JSATS) cabled system and injectable acoustic microtransmitters. He is currently leading a team consisting of fisheries biologists, chemists, batteries engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and materials scientists, developing microtransmitters for juvenile eel and lamprey for USACE and DOE. Dr. Deng is also the lead engineer for the JSATS multi-dam performance studies in the Columbia River Basin for USACE. He has authored 65 peer-reviewed journal articles and 70 government technical reports, and has given invited talks at a number of international conferences. |
