I report on recent progress to understand the nature of fast radio bursts. Most properties are inferred through propagation effects, including dispersion, scattering, scintillation, and rotation measure. I will review the issues, survey some of the proposed candidates ranging from terrestrial to cosmological, and conclude with prospects for the near future.
Bio: Professor Ue-Li Pen is a professor at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA) and at the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics and the Department of Physics at the University of Toronto. His research interest is astrophysical systems where basic physical effects can be isolated from astronomical complexities, such as the non-linear dynamics of the cosmic neutrino background, 21cm intensity mapping, pulsar VLBI scintillometry, massively parallel high performance simulations. Prof. Pen received his Ph.D. in astrophysics from the Princeton University in 1995. He was then holding the prestigious Harvard University Junior Fellowship in 1995-1998, and has been a faculty member at the University of Toronto since 1998. |
