We discuss general 1D system for two-phase multicomponent flow in porous media. Using the Lagrangian coordinate instead of time allows separating thermodynamic equations with adsorption, dissolution in both phase and non-equilibrium chemical reactions from the hydrodynamic equation for saturation (so-called splitting). The splitting yields numerous new exact solutions for 1d displacement problems. The solutions are new in two ways: First, it accounts for the effects of capillary and viscous forces on the transport properties. Second, it contains the effects of non-equilibrium sorption and chemical reactions between n-components in aqueous solution. In particular, the system for low-salinity EOR accounts for ion exchange between aqueous (oleic) phase and clays. It is shown that for numerous dissipative and non-equilibrium systems, using the stream-function as a free variable instead of time splits the general (n+1)×(n+1) system of PDEs, into an n×n auxiliary system for thermodynamic parameters (component concentrations and sorption isotherms) and one scalar lifting equation for hydrodynamic variables (relative phase permeability).
In large scale approximation, where the dissipative and non-equilibrium effects are neglected, the system becomes hyperbolic. The continuous injection corresponds to Riemann problem. Injection of polymer/surfactant/low-salinity slug corresponds to waves interactions. In several cases, where the auxiliary system permits for analytical solution, the general problem is reduced to an analytical or semi-analytical solution of one scalar equation.
We present several exact solutions for displacement of oil by slugs of surfactants, polymers, low-salinity and ASP. Several examples from environmental, petroleum and chemical engineering with analytical models are also presented.
The exact solution of direct problem yields well-posed solution of the inverse problem. We present methods to determine relative phase permeability, sorption constants, ionic-exchange constants from laboratory corefloods.
