China Seas have a vast continental shelf from the South China Sea to the East China Sea, and a deep basin in the marginal South China Sea. While the biophysics is characterized by monsoon-forced, highly variable circulation over complex topography with unique ecosystem responses in the China Shelf Seas, it is regulated jointly by extrinsic forcing processes and intrinsic dynamic reaction in the South China Sea basin. In spite of extensive surveys and studies, complete dynamical rationalizations to general ocean circulation and ecosystem have not been established in the China Shelf-Marginal Seas. In particular, solidly based explanations for the nature and origin of the forces that govern shelf-marginal seas circulation and associated biogeochemical response have not been provided. Based on our observational studies and China Sea Multi-Scale Ocean Modeling System (CMOMS), we present an overview to illustrate the processes and novel physics invoked in the circulation and the corresponding ecosystem responses in the China Shelf-Marginal Seas. |
