Abstract: The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) refers to an antisymmetric exchange interaction that promotes non-collinear spin alignments. DMI plays important roles in a host of interesting phenomena, such as magnon Hall effect, multiferroicity, and magnetic skyrmion dynamics. In this presentation, I will report quantitative measurements of interfacial DMI with Brillouin light scattering technique in many different magnetic multilayer thin films. Effective tuning of DMI has also been achieved by interfacial engineering utilizing two DMI-active interfaces. Moreover, we discovered strong DMI across ferromagnet / antiferromagnet interfaces. DMI in such material system exhibits important difference as well as some similarities with that in heavy metal /FM bilayers. Our results provide new insights for designing magnetic thin film heterostructures with tailored DMI for controlling topological spin textures.
Bio: Xin Ma is a postdoc in the Physics Department at The University of Texas at Austin. He received his B.S. and Ph.D degree in Physics from University of Science in 2009 and Technology of China and The College of William and Mary in 2014 respectively. In 2015, he joined in Dr. Xiaoqin Li’s group as a postdoc fellow. His research interests are concerned with Applied Science, which reside at the "interface" between device application and fundamental physics. His research experience concentrates on optical control and probe of spin dynamics and magnetic orders in magnetic nano-structures, which helps develop novel strategies desirable for spin-based information processing technology. |
