Current Status and Emerging Trends in Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics 2017年6月9日(星期五) 10:00-11:30 @逸夫技术科学楼A205
Abstract Ultra-high temperature ceramics are an emerging class of structural materials capable of withstanding extreme environments. These ceramics can be used in applications ranging from hypersonic flight and rocket propulsion to advanced nuclear reactors and lightweight armor. These applications involve temperatures, heat fluxes, radiation levels, strain rates, chemical reactivities, or other stresses that are beyond the capabilities of existing materials. This presentation will review recent research on ultra-high temperature ceramics, focusing on mechanical and thermal behavior at temperature of 2000°C or higher. Examples from research at Missouri S&T related to improving the elevated temperature strength and thermal conductivity of boride ceramics will be presented. The presentation will conclude with discussion of some emerging trends and future needs.

Abstract This presentation will provide advice on publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals for graduate students and early career researchers. Researchers strive to publish scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals to disseminate new knowledge and enhance their professional reputation. Despite the importance of publishing papers, most authors learn the publication process through trial-and-error rather than a systematic approach. Practical aspects of planning, writing, submitting, and revising manuscripts will be discussed.
Bio William G. (Bill) Fahrenholtz is a Curators’ Distinguished Professor of Ceramic Engineering in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly University of Missouri-Rolla) and the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Ceramic Society. He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Ceramic Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1987 and 1989, respectively. He completed his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at the University of New Mexico (UNM) in 1992. From 1993 to 1999, Bill was a research assistant professor in the department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering at UNM. Since starting at Missouri S&T in 1999, Bill has received several awards including seven campus-wide faculty excellence awards, two teaching awards, and a prestigious CAREER award from the National Science Foundation. He was elected a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society in 2007 and was named Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Ceramic Society in January 2017. Bill teaches undergraduate and graduate courses including ceramic processing and thermodynamics. His current research focuses on the processing, characterization, and mechanical testing of advanced structural ceramics for use in environments with extreme thermal loads, mechanical forces, and/or chemical reactivities. He has published over 130 papers in peer-reviewed journals and given over 60 invited presentations on his research. He has been Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on over 50 grants from sources including industry, the National Science Foundation, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.
