Optical emission studies of the laser produced plasma on the surface of different materials have been studied using a Q switched pulsed Nd: YAG laser capable of delivering 850 mJ at 1064nm and 400 mJ at 532 nm coupled with a miniature spectrograph covering the spectral region between 200 nm to 720 nm. The techniques to extract the plasma parameters such as plasma temperature, electron number density, and the validity of the local thermodynamic equilibrium are described. The time integrated emission spectra of the carbon group elements are presented along with the branching fractions of the spectral lines corresponding to the p2→ ps transitions.
