报告摘要:
High speed serial data link is one of the critical developments for future experiments in high energy physics. The challenges in the developments are the requirements in high transmission rates, channel density and low power dissipation, plus radiation tolerance to the detector environment. In physics experiments, the high bandwidth requirement is for the link from the detector to the back-end electronics, while it is also crucial to maintain error-free data transmission to the detector for clock, control and configurations. In this talk I will present the developments in ASICs in the Department of Physics SMU for the data links that ship data off the detector. I will also present the development of miniature optical transmitters for optical links. I will mention two special developments for pixel detectors, one is a serializer circuit with forward error correction that can be embedded in a large pixel sensor, the other is a cable receiver for data transmission over electric cables for inner trackers where the radiation level exceeds the tolerance of optical devices.

I am a physicist in experimental particle physics. From 1989 to 1995 I worked in L3 at LEP on detector simulation, physics data analyses, software development and maintenance. From 1995 to 1998 I worked in CLEO at CESR on detector development for the CLEO III upgrade. Since 1998, I have been a member of ATLAS at LHC. I coordinated the design and construction of the optical link system for the Liquid Argon Calorimeter (LAr) detector front-end readout. I now lead R&D and Construction programs at SMU for upgrades in ATLAS and for next generation detector data transmission in HEP experiments.
