My work on publishing ethics is related to my work as EiC of APSUSC, being a member of COPE - commission on publishing ethics (wwc.cope.org) as well as my work as the dean for the Department of Physics and Astronomy (Utrecht) and Faculty of Military Sciences. Ethics is becoming a very important theme in research and is an integral part of any European Research proposal. It is impossible to discuss all aspects of ethics in science in a 45 minute presentation, but I will focus mostly on  ethics in publishing. That would be the role of authors (and co-authors) as well of that of the reviewers. I will also briefly touch on the role of funding agencies (departments) as well as the publishers (editors), but the main emphasis is on authors and reviewers.

Laws are often considered to be "solidified" ethical rules and since laws can differ greatly from country to country so can ethical rules and rules of proper conduct. When we are talking about ethics in science, we are trying to apply "universally" valid values, which are globally accepted in the scientific community.

My work on bibliometric measures is also related to my work for APSUSC as well as my work as a dean (deans are by Dutch law ultimately responsible for research and teaching within a faculty). The Dutch government was very early in the adaptation of benchmark numbers based on bibliometric measures (citations per article, 1/2 life of citations, impact factors etc) for usage in research evaluations. This emphasis on bibliometric values has to some extend been abandoned, since it is now commonly accepted, that these benchmark numbers are very different for different disciplines. It has also been recognized, that it has lead to strategic behavior among the scientists. In this presentation I will cover a bit of the history of bibliometric measures, then the journal based (e.g. impact factor), the article based (citation rate) and the author based (h-index). If necessary, I can also gear this presentation more towards "decision makers" within the university and/or funding agencies. Indirectly, I will also show, how some of these measures can be influenced.

It is important to publish your work in a journal with a high impact factor. However, the chance that your submission will receive a lot of citations is not very big. So what is the best journal for your submission?

The above descriptions are hopefully enough to explain the "spirit" of my presentations. They are both more conceptually challenging than the standard author or reviewer workshop.


报告人简介:
Henrik Rudolph (Frederiksberg, Denmark 1958) received a BA in Chemistry and a MSc in Physics from the University of Copenhagen and subsequently obtained a PhD from California Institute of Technology (USA). In 1990 he joined Utrecht University (the Netherlands) as an associate professor of physics and in 2001 he became full professor in atomic and molecular physics. Since 2012 he is employed by the Ministry of Defense of the Netherlands. His research interests include plasma surface interactions, functionalization of surfaces as well as detailed chemical reactions at surfaces.
