George M. Whitesides was born August 3, 1939 in Louisville, KY.  He received an AB degree from Harvard University in 1960 and a PhD from the California Institute of Technology (with J.D. Roberts) in 1964.  He was a member of the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1963 to 1982.  He joined the Department of Chemistry of Harvard University in 1982, and was Department Chairman 1986-89, and Mallinckrodt Professor of Chemistry from 1982-2004. He is now the Woodford L. and Ann A. Flowers University Professor.

Present research interests include: physical and organic chemistry, materials science, biophysics, complexity and emergence, surface science, microfluidics, optics, self-assembly, micro- and nanotechnology, science for developing economies, catalysis, energy production and conservation, origin of life, rational drug design, cell-surface biochemistry, simplicity, infochemistry, electromagnetic and flames, and soft robots and machines.

George M Whitesides教授于1939年8月3日出生于美国肯塔基州路易斯安娜市。他于1960年在哈佛大学获得学士学位,并于1964年在加州理工学院获得博士学位。Whitesides教授从1963年到1982年任教于麻省理工学院,从1982年开始在哈佛大学任教。期间在1986年到1989年担任化学系主任,随后从1989年到1992年,他担任哈佛大学艺术与科学学院副院长职务。

目前,George Whitesids担任哈佛大学Woodford L. and Ann A. Flowers 冠名大学教授。他主要的研究领域包括物理与有机化学、材料科学、生物物理学、复杂性理论、表面科学、微流体、自组装、微纳米技术、发展中经济体科学、生命起源以及细胞表面生物化学。

迄今为止,Whitesides教授已发表了近1200篇科技论文,申请专利130余项。他还是超过12家公司的共同创始人之一,这些公司主要有美国健赞公司(Genzyme)、GelTex制药公司、Theravance 公司, Surface Logix 公司,Nano-Terra科技公司以及WMR 生物医学公司。除此之外,他目前还是许多科技期刊杂志的编辑顾问委员会成员之一,这些科学杂志包括Angewandte Chemie、Advanced Healthcare Materials、Chemistry & Biology以及Small。

报告简介:

 "Robotics" is a field with broad interest: it combines mechanical engineering, information science, and animal physiology with manufacturing, workforce development, economics, and other areas. The most highly developed classes of robots have been build based on conceptual models provided by the body-plans of animals with skeletons (humans, horses), and have made it possible to carry out tasks that humans and animals could not (for a variety of reasons).  We are interested in robots based a different, simpler class of organisms (invertebrates: starfish, worms, octopi). Because these organisms, and the robots having designs stimulated by them, have no skeletons, they provide enormous opportunities in materials and polymer science, rather than primarily in mechanical engineering. This seminar will outline one approach to soft robots, and suggest problems and opportunities in this new field.
