ABSTRACT
This talk presents the development and potential applications of a new class of highly dispersible nanoparticles developed at Auburn University for environmental remediation uses. Using low-cost and environmentally friendly starch and cellulose as a stabilizer, we synthesized various novel nanoparticles including zero-valent iron (ZVI), iron sulfide, iron phosphate, palladium, and iron oxide nanoparticles for in situ environmental remediation uses. Compared to traditional non-stabilized particles, our stabilized nanoparticles offer some unprecedented advantages, including that 1) they can be easily delivered into the targeted contaminant zones in the subsurface, 2) they are more reactive, and 3) their size and transport can be controlled by manipulating the concentration and type of the stabilizers. Based on these nanoparticles, we developed a number of in situ remediation technologies, including 1) in-situ destruction of chlorinated hydrocarbons, nitrate and perchlorate in soils and water using stabilized ZVI nanoparticles, 2) in situ immobilization of mercury in soils and sediments using stabilized FeS nanoparticles, 3) in situ reductive immobilization of chromate in soils using stabilized ZVI nanoparticles, 4) in situ immobilization of Pb2+ using stabilized iron phosphate nanoparticles, and 5) in situ immobilization arsenate using stabilized magnetite nanoparticles. This presentation will briefly review these newly developed technologies.
