报告摘要

       This talk situates its analysis on body-mind connections through computer music, mediation technology, and digital arts. Rooted in the richness of contemplative culture, embodied cognition, and “deep listening,” Embodied Sonic Meditation practice invites new ways of using sensorimotor coupling through auditory feedback to create novel artistic expressions and to deepen our sonic awareness and engagement in the world. From a scientific perspective, Wu conducts quantitative and qualitative research and proposed the first scientific evaluation framework for Digital Music Instrument (DMI) design in audio processing, specifically the mappings from (bodily) action to (sound) perception from the audience’s perspective. Empirical data show evidence of valid design and identifying the audience's degree of musical engagement. From an engineering perspective, Wu defines DMI design principles based on her interface design experience and the criteria of efficiency, music subjectivity, affordance, culture constraints and meaning making, and technology. Three multimedia pieces—Mandala, Tibetan Singing Prayer Wheel, and Resonance of the Heart—will be introduced as proof-of-concept case studies.

报告人简介

        Originally from Beijing, Jiayue Wu is an assistant professor of music at the University of Colorado Denver’s College of Arts and Media. During 2000-2010, Wu worked as a professional musician for Universal Music Group and EMI Records. In 2013, she obtained her master’s degree in Music, Science, and Technology from Stanford University, where she focused on computer-assisted composition and audio signal processing. In 2018, Wu obtained her Ph.D. in Media Arts and Technology from the University of California Santa Barbara, where she studied computer music and multimedia technology with Dr. Curtis Roads. Her research interest focuses on the healing power of music and how technology can augment this powerful force. Wu's music has been performed in China, Southeastern Asia, the United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and Europe. As an audio engineer, she received a two-year grant award from Audio Engineering Society. As a musician, she received an award from the California State Assembly for being a positive role model in sharing Chinese culture. As a multimedia artist, she received the “Young Alumni Arts Project Grant Award” from Stanford University. As a scholar, she received a University of California Central Campus Diversity Fellowship, a University of California Central Campus Humanities Research Fellowship, as well as a National Academy of Sciences Sackler Scholar Award.
