Abstract: The world is facing a great transition issue in the energy industry, where the investment and supply of renewable energy continuously increase, and the fossil fuel-based energy, even still owning a significant share, is facing economical and environmental pressure. South Korea reported a draft of the 3rd energy basic plan, aiming at raising the share of renewable energy in the country’s total energy demand up to 30~35% by 2040, while a drastic reduction in coal-fired power generation. Decommissioning of ageing coal-fired power plant has been announced, while new coal-fired power plant is banned, which results in a prediction of reduction for the share of coal-fire power. However, The issue of the decommissioning of coal-fired power plants leads to the concern about the national energy security and growth crisis on domestic project ecosystem, as well as the probability of arising energy cost. The lecture will share the up-to-date energy policy and plan in South Korea, and the perspective of the coal-related society and professionals in the ear of energy transition. Global key alternative for the coal-related industry, as well as the novel technologies and application will also be discussed. Some conclusion and proposal about the coal-fired power industry of South Korea will be drawn and are supposed to be significantly meaningful for the coal-fired power industry of China.
