  简介:

Abstract

The focus of Computer Science has changed from making computers useful to the applications of computers. This has drastically changed the mathematics that is used.  This talk will focus on the mathematics of high dimensional space, random walks on large graphs, learning theory, randomness, and wavelets.  The talk will give a simple introduction to these areas.

Bio

John Hopcroft is the IBM Professor of Engineering and Applied Mathematics in Computer Science at Cornell University. Hopcroft's research centers on theoretical aspects of computing, especially analysis of algorithms, automata theory, and graph algorithms.

He was honored with the A. M. Turing Award in 1986. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the fellow of AAAS, IEEE, and ACM.
