Sybrand van der Zwaag is a material scientist and was full professor at Delft University of Technology, Delft, the Netherlands from 1992 till his retirement in 2021. He holds an MSc in Metallurgy from TU Delft, a PhD in Applied Science (Supersonic impact of ceramics and glass) from Cambridge University and has an industrial career in liquid crystalline polymer fibers. As of 2004 he has been one of the pioneering researchers in the field of self-healing materials (SHM), focusing on the underlying concepts, rather than on particular materials.  He has been the scientific director of several national and international programs in the field. In this presentation he will present several examples of their realization. Professor Van der Zwaag has published over 600 journal publications, edited several books on SHM and has supervised 70 PhD students. He has been a visiting professor at MSE Tsinghua University since 2014.
