Abstract:

The Eisenman    lab is interested in the transcriptional regulation of normal and    neoplastic cell growth and proliferation. We have focused for many    years on the MYC gene family– an evolutionarily conserved group of    genes encoding essential proteins deeply involved, on multiple    levels, in normal cell functions. Moreover, the normal highly    regulated expression of MYC is subverted and deregulated in a very    wide range of both solid and hematopoietic cancers. MYC proteins are    DNA-binding transcription factors of the bHLHZ class. Importantly    MYC does not function alone but is one member of a larger network of    bHLHZ proteins. My talk will describe this network and illustrate    how functional interactions among network members are important in    both the development and suppression of cancers.
