Title: Structural Combinatorial Strategy for Nanoscience

Abstract: In more than a decade, the combinatorial strategy toward materials science has been mainly related to finding new or optimizing existing material compositions. Most recently the need for efficient structural optimization has been appearing, and the new structural combinatorial strategy can be one of the most effective tools for such an effort. This talk introduces the use of a new structural combinatorial strategy toward efficient nanoscale structural optimization and directly fabrication of new nanophotonic or nanoelectronic devices. It summarizes our recent progresses on new multi-functional nanostructured photodetector development, advanced negative refraction physics study via the efficient structural spreadsheet approach, and tunable plasmonic studies.

About Dr. Lu: Dr. Lu was the R&D Director and a Sr. Scientist in the Photonics Division in Thermo Electron Corp. from 2001 to 2003, and the R&D Manager and Sr. Staff Scientist in Corning Inc. from 2000 to 2001. Dr. Lu was an Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering in Tufts University during the period from Dec. 1997 to Oct. 2000. He was also a Visiting Professor in Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Chemistry College in University of California at Berkeley from 1996 to 1997. Dr. Lu was also appointed as an Associate Professor in both Physics and Materials Science in Nanjing University, P. R. China, during the period from 1991 to 1996, at where he was also the leader of Optical Materials and Related Devices. He was Co-PI and PI for Chinese 863 key projects for both ‘75’ and ‘85’ periods. Dr. Lu was also the founder of MicroDomain Corp (merged) and Lutronics Inc.
Dr. Lu was the recipient of many prestigious awards including the 1st place Chinese Natural Science Award, nomination for US Air Force Sailor Award, Chinese ‘863’ outstanding certificate, etc. He has been acting as PI or co-PI for ~20 government and industrial research funds with a total budget more than $12 millions, and have numerous publications, invited presentations, patents, etc.
