“The Eyes of doctor T.J.Eckleburg” : Intersections between Literary and Visual Culture

Abstract:

One of the important recent developments in critical theory, following the intial impact of European thought upon literary and cultural criticism, has been an interest in visual theory and culture.Martin Jay ’s Downcast Eyes and Hal Foster’ s collection, Vision and Visualty, led the way and raised issues common to critics of literature and visual culture: point of view, space and time ,and the appearance of text in painting, and visual images in literary works.

This lecture will examine these theoretical intersections, but also examples of more direct crossovers in specific works of art and literature.
