For emergency evacuation, building systems need to operate in a coordinated and timely fashion.  For instance, the guidance of people to safely evacuate from a building via its egress paths must be accompanied by properly pressurizing certain areas with fresh air through HVAC airflow control while sealing off unsafe areas.  However, most of current egress and HVAC systems are modeled and controlled separately with little or no attention to such interdependencies.  This paper presents coherent modeling and effective coordination for building emergency evacuation.  To coordinate the two systems without sharing detailed information, our key idea is to let each have a local representation of the global problem by aggregating its own detail model and sending the aggregate model to the other.  For model aggregation, an approach is developed based on wavelet transformations that systematically and coherently link states and decisions across different scales and over distinct time periods.  With the other’s aggregate model, each system solves its own problem by using dynamic programming within the surrogate optimization framework.  A heuristics is then developed to coordinate the two systems for a feasible solution.  The novelty of our approach lies in coherent transformations of states, decisions, and multipliers across different scales for systems with discrete variables.  Numerical results demonstrate that solutions obtained from multiscale models are consistent, and effective coordination is achieved based on aggregate models.

 

演讲人简历Peter B. Luh received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University, M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from M.I.T., and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University.  He has been with the University of Connecticut since 1980, and currently is the SNET Professor of Communications & Information Technologies and Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.  He is a Fellow of IEEE, the founding Editor-in-Chief of the new IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, an Associate Editor of IIE Transactions on Design and Manufacturing, was the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation (1999-2003), and Publications Vice President Elect of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society.
