The increasing evidence of global warming caused by human activity
requires urgent reduction of CO2 emission and the development of alternative
liquid fuels for transportation. The seminar will first provide a vision of
sustainable energy and discuss the challenges and opportunities of
combustion research. Second, the seminar will address the impact of
understanding of kinetic coupling, hydrodynamic instabilities, flame
dynamics, and radiation transport on the combustion of alternative fuels
such as dimethyl-ether, synthetic gas, and liquid fuels derived from
alternative sources at high pressures. Development and validation of
surrogate models for alternative fuels with rigorous consideration of
transport and kinetic coupling, flow compression, and spectral dependent
thermal radiation will be presented. Finally, a brief summary of future
research will be made.
