简介: Using Geospatial Technologies

for Monitoring Asian Elephants in the Wild

Asian elephants are threatened by habitat loss, human-elephant conflicts, and off-take to sustain captive populations.  Asian elephants are much more threatened than African elephants, however we know much less about their behavior and movements as well as the size of their wild populations.  We used GIS mapping to map their remaining habitats and identified Myanmar as the country with the most remaining habitat and lowest percentage of protected habitat.  We conducted a country-wide deforestation analysis based on Landsat imagery, conducted extensive ground surveys, and used satellite tracking to study elephant movements and habitat use in Myanmar.  Dr. Songer will report on the results of this research and discuss a few other projects going on in her Lab.

Biography of Dr Songer (个人简介)

Dr. Melissa Songer is a researcher with the Smithsonian National Zoological Park’s Conservation GIS Lab.   Research at the lab focuses on the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and satellite tracking techniques to the conservation and management of endangered charismatic fauna and their habitats.  Currently her research includes Asian elephants, Przewalski’s horses, Eld’s deer, and dry tropical forests of Southeast Asia.  She also studies human communities and how they impact species and ecosystems to help inform mitigation strategies. Each year she collaborates with Dr. Liu Xuehua to conduct a Conservation GIS course for graduate students and staff of Giant Panda reserves.
