Recent missions to Mars have provided an unprecedented look at the surface of the red planet - a planet that shares many similarities to Earth. The continuing success of the Opportunity and Spirit rovers, in addition to several space craft currently orbiting Mars, is a testament to our technical achievement and human spirit of exploration. Arizona State University, located in Tempe, Arizona, has a long and successful history of involvement in Mars research. Currently the school has a primary role in the operation of two instruments on the planet's surface (mini-TES on the rovers), and two instruments (THEMIS and TES) orbiting Mars. The data returned from these instruments has shown the first clear evidence of water existing on surface in the past. Thermal infrared instruments, in particular, have been key to understanding the geology of Mars and characterizing the present-day martian atmosphere. This marks a new era in understanding processes and evolution of both a foreign planet and our entire solar system.
