  简介:
Accurate numerical simulations of combustion processes can provide a valuable design tool for the development of cleaner and more efficient engines and furnaces. However, the present generation of simulation models do not fully describe the complexity of the interaction between combustion and turbulent flow and can sometimes provide misleading predictions. The lecture will describe a detailed comparison between experiments and model predictions in an idealized geometry, where comprehensive experimental data can be obtained and the model equations can readily be solved. Although mean flow and turbulence quantities are accurately predicted, significant discrepancies are found between mean heat release rate predictions and experimental data. Finally, some necessary improvements to the simulation models will be outlined.
