Abstract: Environmental analytical chemists traditionally have developed analyses which are now done by technicians. Todays chemists must broaden their skill sets to perform analyses on more complicated systems for industry. The core skill of the analytical chemist is that of a technical problem solver. Some specialized analyses requiring the skill of the analytical chemist working with chemical and environmental engineers will be reviewed including solving the following problems: A gas phase free radical chlorination reaction has over-pressured and vented solvents to the atmosphere. Is there a chemical reason? The EPA is requiring you to emit lower than the EPA method will allow you to detect. What can you do? Water is showing up in carbon steel vessels and pipes from an anhydrous waste process designed to recycle organic material; if it leaks, you could face an environmental fine and lose valuable process equipment. Can you solve the problem with chemistry? A green, fuming solid is plugging a hydrogenation operation for recycling chlorinated organics. What is it and how do you prevent the solid from forming? Boiler tubes from a version 1.0 gas oxidizer are plugging; you are building a unit 5x larger. What do you do? The Standard Methods won????t work for your wastewater because of the matrix. What is the measurement solution? |
