Biocompatible dispersions of magnetic nanoparticles have shown great potentials as bimolecular labels for imaging, sensing and separation applications. These require that particles be superparamagnetic at room temperature, and monodisperse in size for uniform biodistribution, bioelimination and contrast effects.
We have developed various synthetic procedures for making monodisperse magnetic nanoparticles of iron oxide TFe2O4 (T = Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Mg), metallic M (M = Co, Fe, CoFe), core/shell structured M/TFe2O4, Fe/MFe2O4, and dumbbell-like NM-Fe3O4 (NM = Au, Ag, Pt, Pd) with controlled size and magnetics. By using either surfactant addition or exchange, we have succeeded in functionalizing these nanoparticles with various biomolecules. Applications of these nanoparticles in highly sensitive DNA sequence detection will be illustrated. |
