Because of the very low cooling rate assumed in iron meteorites they are consists of very huge single crystals. For the investigation of precipitation, in particular for the development of reliable tools for the characterisation of phase boundaries, therefore iron meteorites are a suitable material since one of the related crystal co-ordinate system can be seen as fixed. Despite the observed plastic deformation in the metallic matrix some orientation relationship problems have been solved, independent from the crystal symmetry of the related phases. The presentation will introduce you in the world of iron meteorites and EBSD, but will also guide you how EBSD can be applied to characterise orientations or discover orientation relationships between fcc/bcc but also between some other phases. In order to show the value of the developed procedures with respect to more practical problems, finally the presentation will point out investigations on duplex steels which show extreme similarities.
Curriculum Vitae
Dr. Nolze received a M.S. in Crystallography in 1986, and his Doctor degree in 1991 from Leipzig University (Germany). In his thesis he investigated the non-centrosymmetry in AIIIBV semiconductors using lattice source interferences (Kossel effect). In 1991 he got a position in the Academy of Science and 1992 in the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing where he developed together with W.Kraus the world-wide used and free program PowderCell which simulates the X-ray powder diffraction patterns. In 2000 he became responsible for the Scanning Electron Microscopy in his department, in particular for the application of Electron Backscattered Diffraction. Because of his large experience in this field, 2002 he has been chosen by the german EBSD-community as the organiser of the annual EBSD meetings. Scientifically, he is interested in orientation relationships formed by precipitation, and all metrological problems related to EBSD.
