Heterotrophic and mixotrophic microalgal growth strategies have the potential for mass production at lower costs because of potentially higher cell density and productivities, which can be achieved in conventional fermenters. The centric diatom Cyclotella cryptica and the green alga Tetraselmis suecica have potential for large-scale fermenter production due to their biological attributes, therefore they are excellent candidates for further investigation.
