Dr. Shaowen Wang received his BS in Computer Engineering from Tianjin University, China in 1995; MS in Geography from Peking University, China in 1998; MS in Computer Science and Ph.D. in Geographic Information Science from The University of Iowa in 2002 and 2004 respectively. His research interest centers on cyberinfrastructure and geographic information science / systems, with a focus on algorithms as well as the performance and visualization of geographic information analyses based on high performance and distributed computing. His recent research is published in journals such as Concurrency and Computation: Practice and Experience, International Journal of Geographical Information Science, Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Parallel Computing, and Statistics and Computing. Dr. Wang is the founding director of the CyberInfrastructure and Geospatial Information Laboratory (CIGI), Assistant Professor of Geography and Informatics, and Senior Research Scientist of the National Center of Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He serves as the director of the TeraGrid GIScience Gateway based on the GISolve Toolkit (http://www.gisolve.org) which he architects and leads the development for. He is also the Troubleshooting Coordinator of the Open Science Grid. His current research is supported with over $1.5 million funding mainly by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.
Abstract:
Cyberinfrastructure represents integrated information and communication technologies for distributed information processing and coordinated knowledge discovery, which promises to revolutionize the way that science and engineering are done in the 21st century and beyond. Cyberinfrastructure offers great opportunities to enhance GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and enable GIScience and geospatial problem solving. This research presents the opportunities, challenges, and an integrated solution to cyberinfrastructure-based GIS. This cyberinfrastructure-based GIS solution systematically integrates the following cyberinfrastructure capabilities: high performance and Grid computing, data management and visualization, and virtual organization support to enable cyberinfrastructure-based geospatial analysis and problem solving. A service-oriented architecture is developed to treat spatial analyses as web services that can be integrated with cyberinfrastructure services and shared by a large number of users via Internet. The solution is implemented as a Web GIS – GISolve that is developed and deployed on the National Science Foundation TeraGrid – a key element of the US and worldwide cyberinfrastructure. Several use cases of scientific analysis are employed to demonstrate GISolve functions. |
