Software Watermarking Techniques

We survey past work in software watermarking with respect to a recently-introduced taxonomy.  Our taxonomy is a cross-product of (allowances, or forbiddances) on (actions, or inactions) in the (future, or past).  Four of these eight categories are relevant when we are protecting  software, where we have four distinct goals which may be named as follows: permission (e.g. of authorised use: a future action), prohibition (e.g. of unauthorised use: a future inaction), assertion (e.g. of authorship:a past action), and affirmation (e.g. of authenticity: a past inaction).  Protective systems have been designed, with varying degrees of success, to meet these four goals in many existing applications, using available technologies in cryptography, obfuscation, watermarking and tamperproofing.  We note that little work has been done, to date, on software watermarking in several categories of our taxonomy -- this suggests several promising areas for future research.

Clark Thomborson has served as a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, since 1996.  His prior academic positions were at the University of Minnesota, and at the University of California at Berkeley, with consultancies or temporary positions at MIT, Microsoft Research (Redmond), InterTrust, IBM Yorktown, IBM Almaden, Institute for Technical Cybernetics (Slovakia), and Xerox PARC.  He gained several years of commercial experience in the USA as a systems integrator at Digital Biometrics, LaserMaster, and Nicolet Instrument Corporation.  Under his birth name Clark Thompson, he was awarded a PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie-Mellon University and a BS (Honors) in Chemistry from Stanford.  He has published more than 100 refereed papers on topics in software security, computer systems performance analysis, VLSI algorithms, data compression, and connection networks.
