Over the last decade significant new insight has been gained in regard to how engineering decisions may be made in accordance with societal preferences in regard to investments into life saving activities. Models which have been empirically verified have been proposed for the representation of a Life Quality Index on the basis of which societal affordable decisions on life saving investments may be identified. This provides a general criterion for the assessment of the acceptability of engineering projects but is equally applicable for any other societal sector as well. The presentation provides an overview of the state of research in the field of engineering decision making from the perspective of societal preferences and includes some new results on how models for deriving sustainable decisions may be formulated and utilized in this context. The presentation points to the various problem complexes influencing optimal allocation of shared societal resources and points to the significance of available resources, best practices, traditional and cultural differences between different societies, sectors and professions for the achievement of an optimal and just distribution of personal safety. |
